There are a variety of calibers permitted in Canada. The range goes from .177 to .45 for most traget shooting.
You would likely be looking at following as the most common:
.177 WC (pellet gun)
32 S&W long (target pistols)
45 ACP (NRA events)
As a starting point I would say 22lr is a good place to start. Low recoil calibers will serve your co-worker well to start as they develop their technical abilities.
