You might also be talking about "eye relief" this is where you can view through the scope without having your eye right up against it. Usually scopes with longer eye relief are much more expensive than scopes that don't offer that feature. Eye glass wearers would usually find scopes with long eye relief easier to use.
: Can anyone explain to me why some spotting scopes require you to look straight down the eyepiece but some can be viewed at an angle to get an image of the target? What is this feature known as technically? Anyone know of particular spotting scope models that allow viewing in the latter manner?
